"My Love From Another Star"
Just watched the first episode on a friend's recommendation:
It was reasonably engaging... right up until the end, where
the premise goes south.
Both main characters issues, and are relatively unsympathetic.
To my eye the female character has worse problems than the
male-- though it'd be interesting to talk that over with
people to see if that perception is universal: she's a
very shallow, ignorant woman who's working the celebrity
racket on the strength of her looks-- unmodified by
surgery, they take the trouble to tell us-- without any
talent to speak of. Her mother comments that she can't
really act, and we see that she can't sing at all.
There's a lot of side-business about the visciousness
of comments from the internet mob, a theme in a number
of Korean dramas-- one wonders if it's particularly bad
there, or if maybe they find it particularly shocking.
The male lead is withdrawn and cold and appears to have
learned to hate humanity after living among it for 400 years.
This is at least interesting, and you can see reasons why
it might be so...
The actual point is that this-- given the title-- is
clearly a set-up where both characters are particularly
ill-suited, and yet they're somehow going to move closer
together.
The female character in particular looks like someone
who needs to wake-up and get over herself, but then
perhaps the male character has similar problem-- his
isolation is self-imposed by his sense of superiority.
But the trouble is that the female lead's severe
ignorance and lack of real talent isn't going to suddenly
go away-- I guess you can imagine her having a
breakthrough where her acting suddenly acquires depth.
