A common approach:

Import an idea from one
field into another field,          SIMILARLY
making adjustments as
necessary to get it to fit.

   Sometimes this can be                 BIBLES
   as extreme as applying
   scientific techniques
   to the study of human
   intellect (psychology,
   sociology).

   But one can also move
   ideas around between two
   sciences, or between two            UP_AND_DOWN
   humanities disciplines.



       An example that comes to mind:

       Richard Dawkins attempts at
       applying ideas about biological
       evolution to the spread of
       human ideas: the analogy
       between "genes" and "memes".
