OTAKU_USA_2017
August 1, 2022
In the August 2017 issue of "Otaku USA", I see that
I placed some blue tabs (pointers to things to look-up TABS
later):
A manga "Descending Stories" by
Haruko Kumota, about:
"Rakugo ['fallen words' or 'descending stories']
is a traditional form of Japanese one-man
theater, a single man sits before an audience,
playing all the roles, telling little stories of
humor and pathos. When Yotaro, a crude but
good-hearted ex-con, is released from jail, he
vows to become a rakugo storyteller and asks the
greatest master he can find to take him on as an
apprentice."
This review mentions in passing that there's already
a successful anime adaptation of this manga, which [link]
is where I think I might start, since it is after all
about a style of verbal performance.
Another manga "Erased" by Kei Sanbe about a boy
who can pop back in time for several minutes
(a power he calls "Revival", since it lets him
undo accidents), but then suddenly jumps back in
time to 1988 where he has the opportunity to prevent
a series of child murders.
Since then, I think stories like this have
become more common, particularly in the world
of korean drama. The reviewer was impressed
by this one (it "defies categorization"), so
let us let my blue tab stand.
A DVD review (untabbed, I can't imagine
why) for "The Ancient Dogoo Girl" which
looks like a bikini babes vs yokai
offering-- these things always *look* like [link]
they're going to be very amusing, but
getting the touch right is evidently
pretty difficult, so I will reserve Well:
judgement...
It's so bad it's bad...
"As far as Noboru Iguchi outings and good. Sometimes. In
go, 'The Ancient Dogoo Girl' is weird, unexpected ways.
pretty tame. The yokai-bashing
violence is basically bloodless, Some episodes have serious
and despite the ample amount of undercurrents to them I didn't
skin that Dogu-chan displays, expect... though it could be
there is no nudity either." they're parodies of the
entertainment-with-a-messsage
idea...
