You want to know why the Star System
is a bad way to run higher education?

This is how it goes: 

Take the top ten percent
from the high schools
across the country.

Cram them into a few
"competitive"
universities.

Watch half of the people
who wanted to study
technical subjects bail
out for easier majors.

   If they'd started at  
   less "stellar"        
   schools, they might   
   still be techies.     
                         
   The star system       
   produces good stars,  
   but fewer "average"   
   techies than they     
   could.                

      (And a lot of liberal arts/social science
      majors with inferiority complexes.)
