HIP_REDUCTION

                                                          September 5, 2005

Once upon a time, Sun Ra is reported to have
had the Arkestra listen to some recent pop records:

"This is some really hokey shit, Sonny"

"This hokey shit is someone's hopes and dreams.
   Don't be so hip!"

One of the reviews of "The Immortal Class" complains
about some of the anecdotes being like Boys Life
fiction...

(Which makes me think that maybe
I should look up some old copies
              of Boys Life.)

In "Don Quixote", I notice that
when Cervantes stops trying to be
all superior to the Romantic and
   writes something conventionally QUIXAND
   romantic -- i.e. a boy-meets-girl
story -- the book gets much more
   readable.

                                                    ANNA_KARENINA
          Similarly, the adulterous adventures
of Anna Karenina are a total yawner,
          but Levin-and-Kitty works in spite
of the absence of the conflict which
is supposed to be necessary for fiction
          to work.

                                 Note: The Thin Man
                                 movies... remarkable
                                 for being a rare
                                 example of a movie
                                 husband and wife team
                                 that actually likes each
                                 other.

  Maybe we keep
  missing the
  obvious...
