The term "subculture" seems to imply
a hierarchy, a splinter group contained
with-in a larger, primary group that
  deserves the name "culture" without
  any qualifying prefix.

  Isn't it likely that
  subcultures overlap? And indeed, don't
                                      cultures in general
An Asian Buddhist and an overlap?
     American WASP may both
be science fiction fans. A family of Germans
                                           raised in Moscow:
                                           what is their culture?

                                                 Does each individual
                                                 have a culture of
                                                 their own?

                                           Instead we think of
                                           cultures as being
                                           primary, atomistic --
                                           so the German family in
Unlike the phylogeny of species, Moscow is an odd case:
cultural categories can and do a group of individuals
mate with each other... with a foot in two
                                           cultures.
   And acquired characteristics
are definitely transmitted. Or with two
                                           cultures
                                           inside them?
