Ross MacDonald was a
contemporary (or immediate
successor, perhaps) of
Chandler, writing
more-than-competent "You can't speed up time.
private-eye novels with a You have to pick up its
philosphical undercurrent. beat and let it support you."

                                "The Moving Target" (1949)

                                                       Which later mutated
                                                       into the Paul Newman
                                                       movie "Archer".

By chance, I first read a later
Ross MacDonald book when I was a
kid -- "The Underground Man" (1971).

I was completely unimpressed by
it, I found it a rather dull
mystery novel.

Though it did have a
peculiar gimmick that SPOILERS
resonates:

    An old grave hidden under
a newer grave, a corpse Civilization?
    beneath a corpse.
                                            Or at least,
                                            Literature.

                                                   FURY
