PASSAGE

                                             March 9, 2004
                               Rearranged: June 19, 2006

My Dad evidently told this story (I never
heard him tell it, myself) that took
place in his late teens/early twenties.

He threw a baseball back to some kids who were
playing around on the street. They yelled back
to him "Thanks, Mister Brenner!"

He was struck by that "mister",
and went off thinking to himself
"That's right, I'm a Man now."

It was time for him to be an Adult. And it probably wasn't all
                                         that long after that that
                                         he ended up enlisted in
                                         the Air Force during World
                                         War II.
There used to be a much
    sharper sense of
    transition between child
    and adult. No "rite of
    passage" required.

    This "taking time to find
    yourself" business is
    pretty new.
