PATTERN_ACTION

                                             October 17, 2020

It's one thing to recognize a pattern,
it's another to turn that into action,
into a plan for working with it...

I know about the explosion of diversity
that a new media channel creates--
and about the tendency for that diversity
to decline as a consensus emerges on
   the what's successful-- I didn't,
and perhaps don't have a feel for what
   to do in those situations.

The thing to do is not
        just one experiment,
        but hundreds of them.

I've had a vague feeling that "let a
million flowers bloom" is a curse--
letting evolution choose a handful of
winners is a nightmare for the majority
that isn't going to make the cut.

But a human agency isn't limited to a
            single chance in the lottery.
            Hundreds of experiments could be
            managed by a single group.

                The tricky part:

When managing multiple projects, the thinking
behind them may not be independent, and your
strategy of covering multiple bets might be an
                illusion.

Further, an idea might require the focused
attention of someone who really believes in it--

                   "Intrapreneurship" often flops because it's
difficult to convince an organization to really
focus on anything except it's one biggest success.

                       Another issue: perhaps the age
                       of experimentation has ended?

Contrary to what you may have heard,
the nature of the internet has not (With apologies
yet been decided. to Don Joyce.)
