So, what do people mean by "platforms" these days?

One of the better clues is to start with "platform capitalism":

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_capitalism

"Platform capitalism is an economic and
business model in which digital platforms
play a central role in facilitating
    interactions, transactions, and services
    between different user groups, typically
    consumers and producers."

"Key characteristics of platform capitalism include:"

The article then lists some key characteristics:

    o Network effects
    o Data driven marketing
    o 'Asset-Light' business models
    o Disruption of traditional industries
    o Algorithmic Governance
    o Regulatory challenges
    o Global Reach and scalability

The've got an impressive list of platforms,
all neatly categorized:

    Amazon, Alibaba, eBay
    Uber, Lyft
    Airbnb
    Expedia, Booking.com, Kayak
    YouTube, TikTok
    Google Search, Microsoft Bing
Google Maps, Apple Maps, Petal Maps
    Google Play, App Store
Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video
    Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer
    PayPal
    Just Eat, DoorDash, Deliveroo
    GoFundMe, Patreon
    Upwork, Fiverr
    Kindle, Apple Books
    Indeed, Monster.com, Glassdoor
    Tinder, Bumble, OkCupid
    OnlyFans

I wonder about the sheer *range* of sub-categories,
and the fact that each space has a few competitors
in it... I'm not at all a fan of these "platforms",
but a typical fan of market capitalism could use
this list to claim it's working fine.
