Here David S. Ware uses the reservoir
metaphor to apply to the performance space:
                                                   http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2002/04/11/derk.DTL#ixzz1uUfdV5gA
"The space is a great, great part
of creativity and music making, and
you must have a connection with
    this space," Ware emphasized. "You
must. It's like a reservoir of
creativity. You dip down into the
    reservoir, and you bring back
treasures. That space is also a
witness. As the years go on,
especially if you have some kind of
    formal meditation practice, it
becomes more and more and more of a
    witness. This witness quality is
very sacred for me. It's really one BEANBENDERS
of the goals of being an artist, to CELLSPACE
find your awareness in this witness ABC_NO_RIO
condition, where you know the truth
of the action that you perform."

  So:

"You dip down into the reservoir,
   and you bring back treasures."

Which means that the artwork is
   something *other* than water, it's
like debris buried under the water.
