                                              FORMALIST

The dismissive attitude toward 'formalists'
who place emphasis on the outward show of
religious practice is interesting to me
because it's one of the few things that I
have some respect for in religion.

   Going along with a traditional
   ritual even if you don't have any
   deep understanding of the function
   it serves makes some sense to me--

   The social functions of shared religious
   observance are clearly real, and possibly
   quite valuable.

   Expecting a religous ritual to have some
   sort of magical effect, to be rewarded
   directly by god, that strikes me as crazy.
   Maybe: "primitive supersition", certainly
   "pretentious and egocentric".
