This is hardly a syndrome confined
to japanese culture, but there
seems to be a definite, really NOUNIFICATION
widespread pattern for adopting
an insult as a flag to wave, for
taking a label intended to be
negative and reversing the spin.

   Just as the American geek/nerd
went from reviled to something Notably, this happened
respected and honored... when a bunch of them
                                       started making a lot of
The term Otaku was a label money.
   for people obsessed with
   manga/anime to the point of
   losing touch with reality...
now it means little more than
"extreme fan", and it's possibly LOLITA_MOE
on it's way to an even weaker
   term.

Then there's terms like yaoi, HOST
      which was an acronym for
"no climax, no point, no meaning"
before it became the name of an
      odd sub-genre of male homeroticism
      slanted toward women.
                                                         SHOJOS_DESCENT
      And then there's fujoshi...
