SOUND_CIRCUMSTANCE
November 22, 2011
An odd chain of circumstances
got me interested in burning
"audio magazines" on DVD-R disks:
o My laptop was down, but my workstation was
up, and equipped with a DVD burner.
o I don't own an mp3 player
o I have a DVD player that can
play DVD-Rs of mp3s (though not oggs)
o I have the DVD player set up:
o by the bedside
o the sound from the DVD player
was plugged into an external Got that? You do things like

additional consequence: you can

convienient for me to listen
to mp3s off of DVD-R disks,
using headphones while lying
in bed at night.
I can navigate to a particular
track using the TV, then shut it
off without losing the sound.
I probably can't get across how arbitrary
and random each of these points really was:
o I was procrastinating on getting the laptop
repaired, because it wasn't urgent (I
wasn't commuting, and when at home I use a
real workstation), and I dislike just
throwing things out and replacing them,
though that's what I did eventually.
o I have nothing at all against
portable audio players, and yet
I don't own one. MISSING_BOX
o After our last DVD player died young,
I did some research before buying
another, but the ability to play sound
files was not at all a criteria.
o I used an old computer-grade set of
powered speakers to augment the TVs
sound just because our TV at that
point was even lamer than usual.
And I could go on...
(and on...) (I tried writing a

which I can only hear
over the internet.
Much as I like the "live"
character of radio, the
time-shifting convenience
of downloaded audio files
often won out.
For some reason (I don't
remember what) I couldn't
get burned CD-Rs to work for
this purpose, so I burned
DVD-Rs.
Just burning one or two shows seems
like a waste of the capacity of the SONIC_WEAVE
disk... so I started hunting out
even more stuff, to fill out the
disks. And it occurs to me
I used to do something
similar in my early
cassette taping days...
