One of C.S. Pierce's greatest hits:
"... metaphysics is a subject much more curious than
useful, the knowledge of which, like that of a sunken reef,
serves chiefly to enable us to keep clear of it ... "
You can say that of much of philosophy, really.
The study of philosophy may not get you very far
practically, but at least you don't flail around
quite as much as the "philosophically naive",
who insist on reinventing the old mistakes.
A nice line that's less popular for some reason:
"... I know that in the matter of ideas the
public prefer the cheap and nasty ... "
