Ta-Nehisi Coates, "Notes From the Eight Year" p.289:
"I believed that the answer to the question of
the color line was right in front of us. Rob a
people generationally and there will be effects.
I also understood why that answer, barring
extreme external events, would never be accepted
and reckoned with. It simply broke too much of
America's sense of its own identity. So I felt
after this last piece that I was done arguing.
I was resigned. I was at peace."
You might try apply to Coates
the common armchair diagnosis
that "conspiracy theory" fans
receive:
Conspiracy believers feel
proud that they know The
Truth, they've got a glow
of superiority about their
private knowledge, a sense
of martyrdom about their
persecuted state.
But then, as always what actually
counts is whether what's being
said is actually correct, not the
psychological motivations of the
person saying it... but Coates
keeps bringing this in, he wants
to tell us how he *felt* about
what he wrote...
