A bit from Alan Moore's "Watchmen" that I
thought was particularly brilliant:
One of the issues of the day is what to make
of costumed vigilantes, should they be allowed
to run around acting anonymously even if they
are-- mostly-- doing good, well-intentioned things?
Our friends at Rorschach's favorite publication, the
trashy far right "New Frontiersman" are on the side
of the masked heroes, and goes with a headline the
editor/author thinks is fabulously clever:
"Sometimes the Hawk Must Go Hooded"
The thing is, if you know the slightest bit about
"hawking" you'd realize that putting a hood on
a hawk is a control mechanism. They're trying to
argue that the vigilante's deserve free range of
action, but they're doing it using a phrase that
seems to me exactly the opposite: sometimes the hawk
must be kept under control.
Every now and then, people are amazed at the
sheer stupidity of our present day "alt right",
e.g. you want to demand your freedom to work so
use the phrase "Arbeit Mach Frei", a mocking
slogan from forced labor camps...
And so, I find myself thinking of the genius
of Alan Moore.
