The opening of the anime
show "Cowboy Beebop" is
strongly reminiscent of the
opening of the the early 70s         The theme is perhaps not
American TV show "Mannix",           really Kanno's best work...
from the style of the
Yoko Kanno theme music,                But nice tail.
to the once "arty"
split screen layout...                 And it's grown on me, as
                                       these things will.
A bizarre choice: Mannix was
always a really boring                         CORRUPTING_VISION
television show-- it was
just the only "private eye"
show on the air circa-1970.      In comparison, the somewhat uneven
                                 "Rockford Files" (1974-80) was high art.

The Mannix theme music always
seemed pretty dull as well...
a really watered down, later-day
form of "private eye jazz".          Though I guess right afterwards
Peter Gunn it was not.               all the television theme music
                                     went rock-n-roll... Mannix
       What a strange thing          might be notable as one of the
       to choose to imitate.         last of a breed.

       This must be one of those
       cases where people in another
       country had a radically
       different perception of a
       cultural product from this
       country.
