THE_FREUD_SYNDROME
August 23, 2017
I often make the case that human beings
are frequently, if not fundamentally
irrational, and you can see outbreaks of
craziness even in the highly educated
intellectual classes that you'd think
might have learned better.
That hardly seems like an unfamiliar or
controversial line to take: the Though there are some factions
fundamental irrationality of the human that might regard it as
psyche was an idea popularized (if not controversial, e.g. the
invented) by Freud almost a century ago-- devotees of Von Mises.
and in fact the very popularity of Freud
is an excellent example of the kind of MADNESS
craziness I'm talking about.
For many decades, to be critical of
Freudianism was the mark of a narrow-minded
parochialism that no true intellectual
would take seriously.

Then, my impression is there was a long
period where Freud's star gradually set, And this pattern, I hereby assert,
followed by explicit criticism only much is an all-too-familiar syndrome:
later:
There was no Grand Debate
o the rise of different variations on followed by a dismissal of
Freud, alternative psychoanalytic Freudianism-- rather there
doctrines was a period of propping-up
and patching, then a quiet
o the significance of psychoanalysis slinking away, followed by
(talk therapy) gradually declined-- careful analysis only
more emphasis on psychiatric drugs later, when it was of
purely forensic interest.
o then, once it was safe to say it
out loud, there was an outbreak of
studies of Freud establishing that
his scientific pose was nearly a
complete fraud.
Freud claimed to be a scientist, but
made up data when convenient,
misrepresenting his case studies THE_FREUD_LINE
at will.
FREUDS_GARDNER
Just consider the sheer number of
years it took for this fraud to be
exposed....
If that seems like a dull, nearly
forgotten aspect of intellectual
history to you-- I ask the question,
have we gotten all that much better?
What favorite doctrines are trumpeted
today that will become tomorrow's
forgotten embarassments?
Freud popularized the idea of mass insanity,
Freud's popularity proves it.
It is not the only such proof.
