From a post to alt.gothic
I just dropped by Muddy's this evening, where Tommy
(the gothic-industrial barista) was in a talkative
mood, and recommended some newish anime stuff that
he likes:
"The Last Exile" (which
sounds like some odd, Kaos of alt.gothic remarked:
alternate universe, a
steampunkish mixture of "Airships, a breach in the honour
high and low technology) of warfare and two young 'pony
express' inspired messengers who
race... whatever their plane was
called in their downtime?"
"It almost broke my addiction to
mecha. Steampunk airships = way
cool."
"'Witch Hunter Robin' is having a
similar effect, particular given
it's almost exactly like the story
I've been dreaming about since I
was 13. And I mean 'dreaming'
literally, like REM cycles and stuff."
"Hellsing" (about the
Hellsing Organization,
dedicated to fighting the
undead, founded by Van "Helsing" is a pretty odd name for
Helsing). Dracula's opponent, isn't it? I should
break out the Stoker and see if I can
work up a Borgesian reversal of the
story... Dracula dies for the crime of
bestowing the gift of eternal life.
Though actually, I'd
rather look for the
Burton translation
from the Hindu of
"Vikram the Vampire".

One of the original sources
of the contagion, I would
think, though you could make
a strong case for Polidori
being the primary vector:
VAMPIRE_TIME
"Devilman"
I balked at that one.
This is one of the cheesiest, most
dorky, useless things I've ever seen,
and if anyone doubts my word I can
easily be talked into mailing you my
copy of the video tape.
Then he backed up, and said that the
*second* Devilman was good, the first
one was a little lame because it was
all "just set-up"... I remain (Aug 13, 2021) Though I've only
skeptical, though. seen one episode of something that
purports to be "Devil-Man"-- it
could've been a knock-off, or
perhaps Devil-Man is a case where
a childish, stupid property got
reclaimed by someone interested in
doing a Frank Miller with it.
I'm told there's a take-off
of "Westworld" now that's
okay-- who would've expected
that one, eh?
Another alt.gothic person
recommended "Samurai X"--
I remember thinking that was
watchable, but just.
They specified "OVA"s though,
which might not be what I
looked at.
