in different ways.
Let's try
Sound vs. meaning and
Matched vs. contrasted:

sound The seamless, The abrupt change,
invisible the sudden jump to

music.
meaning A collection The contadiction,
of pieces that the alternate
say the same view... the moving
kind of things. beyond?
The "sound vs. meaning" distinction makes
some intuitive sense to me, though I find
some of the pickier, more philosophically
inclined folks tend to regard it as
confusing or shallow.
By "sound" I mean
the connotative
meaning -- almost
always expressed
in the instrumental There's a cliche that
part of the music. music is about the
expression of emotion,
and words are about
the expression of ideas.
By "meaning",
I mean the That's the thought
denotative I have in mind.
meaning --
almost always (Sorry if it
expressed in feels wrong.)
the lyrics.
Though sometimes
instrumental pieces
have a concrete
intended meaning to
them -- sometimes
hinted at by the
title.
