Later this year 7.0 will be released, using an additional 3,000 codepoints (including, famously, a lot of "emoji", characters used in japanese teen texts, such as the "WOMAN WITH BUNNY EARS").

Note for years they struggled with the 64K ceiling, and then after 2000, they opened the gates and increased allocation by ~50K.

It's only gradually grown since then... consider how long it would take at the present rate of allocation, to reach around ten times the height of this graph...I estimate 500 years. And one would expect that the rate of allocation will slow as time goes on: we are not running out of codepoints.
