Later this year 7.0 will be released, using an additional 3,000
codepoints (including, famously, a lot of "emoji", characters
used in japanese teen texts, such as the "WOMAN WITH BUNNY EARS").
Note for years they struggled with the 64K ceiling, and then
after 2000, they opened the gates and increased allocation by ~50K.
It's only gradually grown since then... consider how long it
would take at the present rate of allocation, to reach around
ten times the height of this graph...I estimate 500 years.
And one would expect that the rate of allocation will slow as
time goes on: we are not running out of codepoints.
