      Real men don't go
      stressing out
      about maculinity.

            There's something irritating
            about white men whining about
            how they're all oppressed and
            don't get no respect.


  But it might just seem
  that way to me because
  it just doesn't apply to
  me so much, personally.

     I had the usual problems
     of the intellectual in gym
     class, but it wasn't                 SCHOOL_OF_PAIN
     because of physical
     limitations.  I just
     didn't believe in
     competing on those
     grounds: team sports were
     beneath contempt, a crazy
     obsession, a sign of a deep
     cultural sickness.

     And it didn't help that
     the way I was raised I
     wasn't ever even taught         (Think about that for a minute:
     the rules of those games.       if you have a dick, they expect
                                     you to know how to play football,
                                     baseball and basketball by
                                     genetic osmosis or something.)



Maybe the reason it seems
weird to me to say that it's all
fundamentally about masculinity is
that I think of it in more
gender-neutral terms:

It's all about being an effective agent,
being competent; it's all about earning           These may be associated
respect and maintaining self-respect              with "masculinity", but
                                                  to me, that's just
    It is true that what we call                  another piece of insanity.
    "women's fiction" often seems
    a celebration of passivity.

    In comparison, even private
    eye novels are remarkably sane.
