An article in Science makes the point
that funding to research issues like
this has been scarce. The NRA has been
busy making sure the CDC doesn't look
into gun ownership as a risk factor in
gun deaths.

There are researchers who are really excited
that they might be able to find out if, for
example, citizen's training programs would
be effective at nibbling away at gun deaths.

My suspicion: the most effective thing
you can do is convince people to stop
   worrying about their instant response
   capability. Storing loaded guns by
the bedside just in case a marrauding
raider breaks in is completely nutty--
but then, once you get that, a lot
of the purpose in keeping guns around
   the house evaporates.

                            Can we do
                            any better?
