DOOM_COMIC
December 2-17, 2012
A Harvey Pekar line,
from the film of
"American Splendor":
It's a thought I've often had
"Oh, she doesn't know about comic book writing.
what she's doing... Whenever I start to indulge
there's too many thoughts like "I could do
words here." better than that!", I stop and
consider the the small number SERIAL_LIVING
of words and images available
to work with. Maybe--
occasionally-- I've got some
better plot ideas, maybe I've
got a few decent lines of
dialog, but could I really put
it all together and get
something that works given the
constraints of the medium?
The critic that's never actually
done the kind of work under
discussion needs a sense of
humility about the skills on
display, even if the ultimate
effect doesn't impress.
A thought: the doomfiles
considered as cartoon dialog: KAEL_TECHNIQUE
the central esthetic demand is
terseness, keeping the words
cut down to the minimum.... DOOMIFICATION
where just knowing when you've
got it to the minimum and you PARSIMONY
should stop can be difficult.
A project:
Try re-setting doomfiles
material as word balloons
in comic art...
Raid the public domain
(victorian art, scientific
animal photos...) and make
it a collage effort.
Gradually introduce
drawings of my own as
appropriate...
Maybe contrive a narrative.
(Since I'm supposed to believe
in the power of narrative).
