Listening to the J-pop used in anime,
you can see a tendency to indulge in
horrible 70s-style guitar cheese for wheedle-wheedle-wheedle-wheedle-wee-wee
decades after it had gone out of
fashion in the US.
SEVEN_NOT_PLUS
"Visual Kei" bands, despite their
goth-beyond-goth looks tend to sound
more like 70s cheese-metal. By an odd quirk, sometime around
1990, I once ended up spinning
records for the "international
crowd" (i.e. eurotrash) at a
party in Palo Alto.
They had what I thought was a
terribly cool, hip look about them,
Near the end of the last which I ultimately found confusing:
century, there was something I couldn't get them interested in
like a ten year lag in college radio post-punk like the
musical fashions. Replacements. They all loved things
like Michael Jackson's "Thriller"
But visual fashions
seemed to be
transmitted faster
than musical ones.
CONNECTIVITY
These days, to my ear, J-pop is more in sync with
"American fashion"-- indeed it may not be at all
correct to think of it as "American" any more,
maybe we have a global scene.
But my ear is not exactly a dedicated, experienced
one, in this realm. I'm not really up on "popular music"...
