I thought it interesting that Charles Stross
the (completely brilliant) blog.)
novel "Schismatrix" seemed to
fall on deaf ears when first Bruce Sterling:

     I heard to complaint
     that it was too
     "emotionally cold." MONSTERS

While I like things like Neal
Stephenson's "Snow Crash" well
enough, the extreme enthusiasm
among my fellow nerds for this
watered-down, jokey form of
cyberpunk has always been a
little grating.

That seems to be the formula at present:
you can gaze into the abyss, but it'd
         better be a laugh-a-minute, light-hearted
vision of a world on the brink of
disaster, or else the fen are going to
look for something a little less grim.

                                             And that's the approach of
                                             many Charles Stross
                                             novels, e.g. "Accelerando"
