In "Macross 7" there are signs of
changes in direction, decisions to               SEVEN_NOT_PLUS
tone things down on the fly...

Literally, in the case of the character Ray:
                                       
       It seems a lot like he's supposed to     
       be a black guy, but when they get        
       around to doing a flash back             
       episode, he's become a white guy         
       (and hence totally unrecognizeable).     
                                                
       Throughout the flashback           
       his skin tone (now                 Maybe he decided to spray
       retconned as a "tan") gets         on a darker look when he
       a little darker.                   joined a band.

       Having a black guy in the  
       band was too much for someone?

Then there's Gepelnitch:
clearly a woman, and yet
addressed as masculine
throughout.           
                      
   Since these are supposed to be
   demonic creatures who are
   posessing human hosts, the
   obvious assumption is that this        Note: Gepelnitch was
   is a cross-gender possession...        voiced by a woman:
                                          Inoue Yo.
   But in one of the last episodes,              
   someone recognizes the host body,          In the opening sequence    
   and calls it by it's human name--          Gepelnitch is shown           
   and it's a male name.                      wearing red lipstick.  
                                                           
   Evidently, someone thought the           
   gender switch was too racy.
