"... having a white woman with the name Motoko
Kusanagi is a little strange, no?"
Yes, and any white people named something like
Kusanagi should be ejected from the United
States immediately. Ethnic purity is important
when we've got a war on racism to fight.
"My fear is that Johansson might be that single
white-heroic female character in the film. What
kind of message does that send by having the white My theory is the
character, with a very Japanese name, be the hero message it sends is
of a movie with a supporting cast of predominantly "we're really scared
Asian actors?" of losing money".
And what message does it send to have an PAN_HOLLYWOOD
a super-human character with an artificial
body? The whole damn thing is an ad for
plastic surgery.
"Of course, those characters might just
be whitewashed as well."
Actually, they've got at least some Asian actors on board.
It would be a little weird if they didn't, but then, even
characters that are supposed to look Japanese very rarely
look Japanese in anime.
If we're talking about being true to the original, this
entire issue is simply not something the Japanese
themselves care about very much.

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Ming-Na took to Twitter to voice
her unhappiness with the casting choice when the first photo of
Scarlett as the lead-- now just called Major-- was released."
The idea that Hollywood is calling her by the shortened name
"The Major" as some sort of dirty trick to downplay her
inherent Japaneseness is pretty funny... she's constantly
referred to as "The Major" throughout the series. That's
probably more common than calling her "Major Motoko", though
that's also often done. (Using her full name is very rare,
unless you're a blogger trying to make her sound velly velly
Japanese.)
