MASSIE_CASE

The Yunte Huang book discusses the Massie Case
from 1931, with which Chang Apana had some             Yunte Huang,

As Huang tells the story, this is a case where a
married white woman appears to have been badly
beaten by a lover, after which she tried to cover
for by contriving a story of having been raped by
a group of five Hawaiian men.

Some Hawaiians were arrested for this, but
eventually cleared in court, but by that time
the local white people had been whipped up into
a frenzy, and they refused to believe in the
Hawaiians innocence.  Vigilantes kidnapped some
of them, attempting to force confessions out of
them, ultimately killing one of them.
