MISSING_PIECES

There's a common pattern with me where
I go looking for something in the doomfiles
that I figure I must have said at some point--
typically I want to link to it, rather than
write it again-- and I come up empty.
Despite the hundreds of pages of occasionally
repetitious thoughts going back and forth over
the ground of everything I've thought, read
and done-- I come up with something obvious
for me to talk about, which I haven't.
Sometimes though, I've alluded to it a few times,
touched on it briefly without getting very deeply
into it-- that adds plenty of blind alleys for
me to chase down as I go looking for the piece
I'm sure I must've written, but haven't.
This is common enough that I often lead off with
a remark to that effect-- because after all, it's
the point on my mind when my fingers first hit
the keys. Then I go back on re-write and delete
(or minimize) the remark, because from the
reader's point-of-view, it's often the least
interesting thing about the subject.
So, I'm experimenting with featuring this
remark in a node of it's own... maybe I'll
be satisified linking to this, and skip
the blather-and-delete cycle.
There *might* be some point in researching
whatever patterns underly this syndrome.
I'll try to start listing them here as they
come up (though I wouldn't be surprised if I
just forget about it):
TO_HERE_AND_THE_EASEL
ZAMM
The patterns might not be tremendously
interesting: typically it's something from
the pre-web era, before I started this
obsessive online note-taking, and often
it's something I've talked about elsewhere
(e.g. usenet), and so have a feeling
that I had it all covered.
There are some odd ones though,
like the phrase "Phaedrus' Knife",
which runs through my head often
enough that I was sure I'd
written it somewhere, but it's
only in a published outtake
(blooper reel?).
