NEONEO

                                             March 9, 2007

It dawned on me recently that the prefix
"neo" has acquired a derisive quality
to it. That might be worth investigating.

Are we actively opposed to "the new" now,
after decades of advertising hype promoting
novelty?

  Is it all the fault
of the "neo-cons"? The term "neoliberalism" is
                           very clever in some ways...
                           it's confusing at first, but
A friend points out it pulls off two tricks:
    that "neocon" is a
pretty old term, and (1) you can accuse
    it always had the "conservatives"
    condescending of being "too liberal"
    connotations to it...
                               (2) it distances the speaker
I guess nobody from a contaminated term:
likes those woe to the liberal that
    newbies. dares to call themselves
                               liberal at this stage.
    Everyone likes to
    get into new stuff
    fast so they can
    start lording it
    over the newer
    newbies as soon as
    possible.
