ScarJo as Motoko:
WHITEGHOST
Quite a few people have tried to point
out what I would call the obvious
point that Kusanagi has a Japanese
name but not a Japanese body... Or rather, she has a made-in-Japan
body, rather than a born-in-Japan.
Bamidele 'Tsunami' Ojo writes: [ref]
"While Motoko’s nationality is Japanese, however she isn’t
drawn to look like a Japanese woman. For example in, how
she is portrayed in the anime ‘Stand Alone Complex‘ her
character looks like a Caucasian woman with goofy colored
hair and an athletic build. Honestly, most anime
characters are drawn to look Caucasian in the first
place, with a few anime deviating from that (‘Paranoia
Agent‘ and ‘Bokurano‘ come to mind) where the characters
look Japanese.
"The character’s background as a body switching cyborg also
helps to drive the point home, since Motoko can switch to
different prosthetic body ... "
In the comments, "MetalFace" remarks: [ref]
"Are you guys all serious? You do realize that the major's
race is completely inconsequential to the character right?
She can literally be whatever race or gender she wants. She's
a full cyborg that can change bodies whenever she wants."

Even after hearing this, many people insist
on hanging on to the position that there must
be something wrong here. There are people
who really seem to need this to be an issue.
Any argument is rejected as making lame
excuses for racism...
I particularly liked one youtube video I stumbled
across where a bunch of pretty LA white-people
expressed their outrage, but five minutes into
the video the dude admits he's never actually
seen Ghost in the Shell.
This is an issue that's simply too important
to bother with knowing what you're talking about.
