So, what is it about incest?
It's hugely popular in Japanese doujinshi
(amateur pornographic comic books).
It's a strong element in some very popular
Korean dramas. WINTER_SONATA
There was a French film about a drunken BAD_GIRLS_FATE
mother-son incestuous incident ("Murmur of
the Heart", I think), and an American film
with a similar element.
The later-half of Heinlein's career was
practically built on incest fantasies. TO_SAIL_BEYOND
Then of course, there's it's role in
ancient greek tragedy and in Freud's,
uh, theories of human psychology.
Then, from Anthropology: the taboo on incest
is one of the classic universals of human
culture (though interestingly, since different
cultures have different definitions of "family":
definitions of what qualifies as incest differ).
But then, another popular element from the
J-Cult is "yaoi", male homosexual romance. There are a few
signs of this in
FUJOSHI Korean culture,
e.g. "Coffee Prince".

The fan-club of the "Ouran Host Club" has
a strong fujoshi streak, they frequently
speak approvingly of "forbidden love", HOST
typically referring to male homosexual
romance-- "Thank you for letting us NOUNIFICATION
witness your forbidden love".
That may be the key element:
incest and homosexuality are both
forms of "forbidden love". Another popular one is
extreme class differences...
They supply a barrier to try to
overcome-- Interestingly, tribal
differences ala
Romeo and Juliet aren't
used so much.
Then there's "adultery"
Really, we're living in a world an adult theme popular with
where if two people feel like adults everywhere.
they're interested in each other,
they can just get together and see
where the relationship goes.
But no conflict == no story.
At least not in the conventional
understanding of fiction.
