  Off and on I've been writing up some of

  Just talking about this stuff is awkward.

  feels vain and shallow; even if you've

  of worrying about it seeming "faggy".

  As artforms go, the *purpose* of
  it feels contaminated, impure:

  Isn't it all about showing off, being
  flirtatious, sexy, aren't you just          The default style is an
  posing, trying to impress people?           anti-style: you're
                                              supposed to look like
                                              you're aggressively
                                              trying not to look like
                                              anything much.


  But how is that so
  different from other art?

     The writer may just be trying to get rich,
     The painter may just be trying to get laid,
     The singer may just be trying to do both.     In an interview Leonard
                                                   Cohen suggested to Suzanne
                                                   Vega that her latest album
                                                   was a *mating call*.
