When you walk away from the stereo
in the middle of the song, the song
gets wedged in your head far more
permanently than if you'd let it Those little snatches
play out to the end. of pop songs you hear
as a car radio drives
The conclusion of the song by can be particularly
resolves the tension of it. invasive.
This effect, I think, shoots down
Poe's defense of the short story form:
He argued that it was important to be
able to read a story in a single
sitting, without the mundane world
intruding on the experience.
Actually, that characteristic makes
the story more forgettable than it
might be otherwise. A perfect little
jewel it might be, but it's easily
lost in the crack in the sofa if you
don't make a conscious effort to keep
track of it.
Really, the novel gains it's
strength from becoming an
alternate existance where
you live in parallel with
the real world.
On the other hand, with the
now standard two hour Movie
Sometimes (thankfully, Blockbuster, I find making
not always), being it through that last half-hour
"catchy" is taken as can be tough.

If they ended earlier,

I have a similar problem
with restaurant portions:
their main expenses are
actually rent and
salaries, so they're
inclined to give you far
too much food... so I get
stuck lugging leftovers
around with me.

getting dull after a few
millenia... maybe it's time
to wrap this one up.)
