PURPOSES_OF_MUSIC
Feb 3, 2001
Revised: Dec 17, 2002
Add: Dec 11, 2005
There are many
purposes of music,
many functions it
performs for
different people:
entertainment
meditation
religious ritual
military ceremony
dance - night club DANCE
dance - performance
ballet
modern
ethnic
Broadway
cabaret
one-ups-manship
illumination (art?)
emblems of cultural identity
ear lids: to drown out distractions
the default accompaniment to driving
soundtrack: to enhance/signal the dramatic
life soundtrack: to pose as if in a film
communications signal
a melody can have an assigned denotative meaning
military - 'beat to quarters"
community - church bells: 'wedding', 'passing'... NINE_TAYLORS
Very few musicians make an
effort at fulfilling more
than a few of these purposes.
A music that rejects all barriers, all rules,
A music that tries to embrace all techniques,
all traditions, that uses elements from all
musical cultures will inevitably be limited
to a single purpose:
It becomes an object of
intellectual interest.
A music of everything
can not be a music
of everyone.
