    Software development is a collaborative social
    process (engaged in by very anti-social people)
    and if you want to understand the field, if you
    want to really pin down which tools and
    practices work best, the field would need to be
    studied using social science techniques.  In
    contrast, the people who've done their best to
    maintain control of software development as
    their own intellectual territory are the
    "Computer Science" guys, many of whom seem to
    want to believe that they're working on a form
    of applied math and are very reluctant to put
    down their pencils and go talk to someone in
    the social sciences about designing some real
    experiments to find out what really works.
