I introduced "Unicorn Wings" in
MEN_OF_THE_WEST
And I must say I have trouble
thinking of what cryptic comments
I might want to make about her at
this distance, on the now
all-too universal world wide web.
As mentioned, in the early 70s, she
tried to up-hold the honor of the During that period she liked the
fading hippie dream, believing in an Unicorn motif, and did it up with
ideal of "being a loving person". some impressive metal-work.
In the later 70s and early-80s, she
was much more in the thick of the One way of understanding
East Village scene than I was. "punk" was that it was
a reaction to the hippie
She described a friend of her's as movement of the 60s--
a "real punk", because he refused if peace and love bothered
to say hello to people "because you, well, how do you like
he thought it was bullshit". *this*.
PUNK
I once overheard someone talking about
the local talent-- who didn't realize I
knew Unicorn Wings, comment:
"There aren't any *real artists* in this
school. Well, except for *maybe*--"
Her dad was certainly a Real Artist by any standard,
doing a lot of brilliant sculptural work in wood.
This was clearly both a blessing and a curse, for
her personally: on the one hand, she had a lot of A fairly
exposure to the arts and the arts world to draw on, common
but on the other hand she had intense pressure on syndrome,
her to do it the Right Way I gather.
She once told me about a time when she was a kid,
when she had just painted her room, and on impulse
she decided to start doing hand-prints all over the
door to her room. When her father saw this he got
furiously angry and started ranting "you will
*never* be a *real* artist!"
