WHAT_THEY_CALL_GENOCIDE
May 2, 2025
I like Heather Cox Richardson's columns
quite a bit, though she's often too much On the other hand: reading HRC's
of a cheerleader for the democrats for articles made it clear that it was
my taste. never very hard to write a
pro-Biden editorial. If the
mainstream press universally
refused to do so, that tells you
something about them.
In one of her few writings about the
Gaza situation, I note that she used the
word "antisemitism" 7 times and the word
"genocide" just twice, both times quoting
other people without endorsing the term
herself:

"In the next weeks, protests sprang up around the country, with
protesters generally demanding that university administrators divest
from investments in Israel or in companies that sell weapons,
technology, or construction equipment to Israel, and cut ties to
Israeli universities. They have tended to turn their anger against
President Joe Biden and his administration, whom they blame for what
they call a genocide in Gaza."
You might call this an open
I wrote this response: letter-- I don't remember if
I sent it.
You don't sound convinced that the
term "genocide" is appropriate.
I suggest consulting the legal definition:
https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/genocide.shtml
o Killing members of the group;
o Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
o Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life
calculated to bring about its physical destruction in
whole or in part;
o Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
o Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

"Gaza war: UN rights expert accuses Israel of acts of genocide"
And further, Amnesty International’s Secretary General commented:
https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2024/03/un-special-rapporteur-report-on-gaza-provides-crucial-evidence-that-must-spur-international-action-to-prevent-genocide/
"The time to act to prevent genocide is now. Third
states must apply political pressure on the warring
parties to implement the UN Security Council resolution
adopted yesterday demanding an immediate ceasefire, use
their influence to insist that Israel abides by the
resolution, including by stopping the shelling and
lifting restrictions on humanitarian aid. They must
impose a comprehensive arms embargo against all parties
to the conflict. ..."
But of course, the United States has been supplying arms
to Israel throughout, in violation of US law. And US
Secretary of State Antony Blinken is providing legal cover
on this, with a somewhat transparent insistance that the
charge of genocide is "meritless".
