AWARE_BUT_THERE
February 24, 2011
Something I found
myself saying recently: MELANCOLY_TRAP
What I find interesting about this work:
a love for genre, self-aware but not
paralyzed by it's self-consciousness.
Inside and outside, but still somewhere.
That's a thought I have often,
in different forms... AVENGING_RAND
SUNDAY_CAMP
NULL_HINGED
TOO_CLOSE_TOO_FAR
Interesting art often has a sense of
being deeply engaged with the
material, and yet also standing MELANCOLY
outside of it, commenting on it...
GOTHPUNK
It rises out of a knowledge of history,
there's an acknowledgement that it is
not the first of it's kind; but it It is never merely
cares about what it is, it wants to be satire or spoof,
another addition to a body of work (though it may very
larger than itself. well contain elements
of satire).
Capable of self-criticism,
without feeling flawed It "shows a fondness"
or inferior... for the thing
commented on.
It is self-aware but
has no self-contempt.
That quality of being inside and outside
at the same time is fascinating. The people who
only stand inside
In art and outside of art. don't know where
they are.
(Presuming that one can
get outside of art.) The people who try to
only stand outside...
Either they don't
know what they're
talking about, or
they really do, and
don't want to admit
that they know, and
either way, why
would you care?
Why is anyone ever
impressed by that
posturing?
