When stories-- or artworks
in general- are translated SANKAKU
between multiple different
media, the questions have
to arise:
which is better?
where to start? DRAMAROLA
Manga -> (Radio Drama/ -> Anime -> Live Action
Drama CD) |
| And the "anime"
v stage has some
Soundtrack further subdivisions:
SUBS
What *did* I encounter first? Some cases:
I encountered: My preference:
Ouran Host Club: Anime then Manga the Anime (both are OK)
Black Butler: Manga then Anime the Manga
Standalone Complex Anime then Soundtrack the Anime (vs some CD releases)
Earthmaiden Arjuna Anime then Soundtrack Soundtrack
For the first three, I follow the
expected pattern of prefering the
one I encountered first.
Arjuna is a strong exception: the
anime is barely watchable, to the
point where it spoils the music.
I blotted out
The soundtrack CD, all memories of
however is astounding, my first attempt
easily one of the best at viewing it,
CDs I own (not just the then bought the
best "soundtrack"). CD-- it's by
Yoko Kanno,
after all-- then
attempted to
watch the anime
again, belatedly
remembering why
I abandoned it
the first time.
Competing effects:
o The additional investment of time and money
in later versions leads to to an increase an quality;
o The earlier work is the the pure creative act,
the later is likely to be adulterated and dumbed-down.
Assuming either effect
dominates is not perfect
And an individual might be prejudiced guide. Endless amounts of
toward a particular medium, or have a money has been expended on
tendency to prefer what ever was expensive flops, And there
encountered first, or maybe most are times when the earlier
recently, or whatever is favored by a work is a bit rough, and a
peer group, or because of team of professionals
associations with a particular time succeed in tightening it
and a place-- a social scene, a time up...
of life, a period of history.
Or, of course: if you don't
*like* the first brush, you're
far less likely to seek out a
second...
FIRST_ENCOUNTER
(May 21, 2024)
Interestingly, I didn't even
consider that my pattern of
preferring the first thing
encountered might indicate that
my cultural antenna are working
well: maybe I just do a good
job of finding the best form?
(May 21, 2024)
There are some cases-- not
all that many-- where the
earlier and later versions
diverge and yet are both of
high quality. I like both,
but in different ways, for
different reasons.
The Noel Coward play "Design for
Living" vs the hollywood movie with
similar characters doing different
dialog in a different plot.
The anime series "Standalone
Complex" vs the original movie The actual original
"The Ghost in the Shell". was the manga though:
as usual, I think it's
okay, but the not as
good as the forms I
first encountered.
The play "The Front Page"
and the hollywood movie,
that flips the gender of
one of the characters,
adds a love story without
detracting from the
original satire.
The independent comic "The Ghost in the Shell"
vs the movie version, which adds an additional
character and a different plot: both are
excellent but they have different strengths,
and there's no reason to prefer just one.
