LONG_NOW

  Stewart Brand founded "The Long Now" organization as
  he got older, in an interesting pattern of thought--
  one of his earliest successes was to suggest that we
  needed to see a photo of "the whole earth" from
  space, and to use that image to promote the
  environmental movement.

  What he did for space he then looked for a way to do
  wtih time, launching a project to create a clock that
  could run for 10,000 years as a way to encourage a
  long term perspective, and long term thinking.

  This was also clearly an idea born of his own
  advancing age-- he was starting a project longer than
  his own lifespan, that would persist after his death.



     Now, myself I only barely see the point of this
     symbolic project "the clock of the long now",
     though Brian Eno makes a good case for it in
     an early talk in the series of "Long Now" talks...

     And that series of talks has always seemed to me
     like the real work of The Long Now.  It's an
     organization dedicated to encouraging long term
     thinking, so a series of talks in that direction
     makes perfect sense.
